Breath of Fire

Kapalbhati or breath of fire is a cleansing, breathing technique that is rooted in the yogic traditions. It consists of short, intense exhales and gentle inhales. Physically, this technique helps to cleanse and clear out your lungs and sinus cavities of toxins. Energetically, it helps to purify and refresh your mind and spirit by helping to clear your nodis or subtle energy channels of unwanted energy. Kapalbhati also connects us to the element of Fire which is deeply purifying and cleansing to our Soul.

"80 percent of the toxins in our body are released through the outgoing breath. Regular practice of Kapalbhati Pranayama detoxifies all the systems in our body." -Sejal Shah

Breath of fire is a more advanced breathing technique. A full round is usually 20 breaths, and it is recommended to do three rounds of 20 breaths each to receive the full benefits. However, if you are new to this, I'd start by practicing just five breaths for your first round. If that felt good in your body, then you can try ten breaths the next round and build up from there. It's important that you listen to your body when practicing breath work because it may take some time and patience to be able to complete the exercise in its entirety. I've linked a short three minute tutorial on YouTube that shows you how to do The Breath of Fire. Please go watch this video before you practice this breathwork for the first time.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor or in your chair. Breathe in deeply through your nose.

  2. As you breathe out, draw your lower belly inwards, and forcefully breathe out of your nose with a quick burst.

  3. Allow your breath to naturally pour back into your lungs.

  4. Repeat with calm inhales, followed by powerful exhales for 20 breaths, which is a full round of Kapalbhati breathing.

  5. Afterwards, allow your breath to return to normal. Notice how your body feels. You may repeat up to two additional rounds.

Pro tip: Beginners are encouraged to place their hands on their belly to help bring awareness to the forced contraction.
